GRACE BAY, Providenciales — Thursday 6th August, 2026
A fire at the under-construction Andaz Turks & Caicos Resort in Grace Bay has sparked a broader public discussion about whether the Turks and Caicos Islands’ emergency response capabilities are keeping pace with the rapid growth of high-rise developments across Providenciales.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation and no injuries were reported, the incident has renewed concerns about the country’s preparedness to respond to emergencies in taller buildings that are becoming an increasingly common feature of the island’s skyline.

Fire Breaks Out at Future Resort
Eagle Legal News visited the Andaz construction site after receiving reports that a fire had broken out on one of the resort’s upper floors.
Using our “Eyes in the Sky” drone, we captured aerial images and video showing what appeared to be extensive fire damage to one of the upper-level suites. Black smoke staining was visible across the exterior walls and surrounding glass panels, providing a clear indication of the intensity of the blaze.
Videos and additional photographs obtained by our newsroom accompany this report.
When Eagle Legal News first visited the property following the incident, members of the management team met with our reporters and advised that an official interview could be conducted the following afternoon.
Respecting that request, we delayed publishing our report to provide the resort with an opportunity to comment.
However, when we returned at the agreed time, we were informed that the individual designated to speak with us was unavailable. We were instead provided with the General Manager’s business card and advised to contact him directly.

Andaz Responds
Following publication of our initial report, General Manager Matt Skaletsky contacted Eagle Legal News and confirmed that the resort is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.
In a written statement to our newsroom, Skaletsky said:
“I can confirm that a fire occurred Monday at the site of the future Andaz Turks & Caicos, which is currently under development. Based on our current understanding, the incident appears to have been isolated. There were no injuries, and we are grateful that everyone on site is safe.”
He added that the resort’s team is “working closely with the appropriate local authorities and conducting an internal investigation to determine the cause of the fire,” noting that additional information would be shared should it become available.
The statement provides reassurance that no one was injured and confirms that both internal and official investigations remain ongoing.

A Bigger Conversation
Although Andaz has indicated that the fire appears to have been an isolated incident and thankfully resulted in no injuries, the event has nevertheless prompted broader public discussion regarding emergency preparedness as Providenciales continues to see an increase in high-rise hotel and residential developments.
Separate from the cause of the Andaz fire, information reaching our newsroom has highlighted concerns from several members of the public regarding the operational capacity of the domestic Fire and Rescue Service. Those concerns have resurfaced following the incident and have prompted calls for greater public discussion about emergency preparedness.
Among the issues being raised are reports that only one domestic fire truck is currently fully operational, while larger firefighting vehicles stationed at the Providenciales International Airport are primarily designated for aircraft emergencies and generally cannot leave airport operations during scheduled flight activity.
Eagle Legal News has not independently verified the operational status of the Fire and Rescue Service’s fleet. However, the concerns being expressed are prompting important public safety questions as taller buildings continue rise throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Can Current Equipment Reach the New Skyline?
Over the past several years, Providenciales has witnessed unprecedented vertical development.
Luxury resorts, condominium complexes and mixed-use developments now stretch seven, ten and even twelve storeys into the skyline.
As the country continues to embrace these larger developments, many persons are asking whether emergency services have evolved at the same pace.
Among the questions now being raised are:
- Does the Turks and Caicos Islands Fire and Rescue Service currently possess equipment capable of effectively fighting fires in high-rise buildings?
- What is the maximum height the domestic ladder apparatus can safely reach?
- Are there plans to acquire additional high-reach firefighting equipment as more multi-storey developments exist?
- Were comprehensive fire safety assessments conducted before planning and government approvals were granted for these taller developments?
- Are current building regulations keeping pace with the rapid increase in high-rise construction?
- What evacuation procedures exist should a significant fire occur on one of the upper floors of these buildings?
- Is the country’s current firefighting capacity sufficient to protect residents, employees and the thousands of visitors occupying these developments every year?
These are not questions directed solely at one resort.
Rather, they are questions affecting every existing and future high-rise development throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Growth Must Be Matched by Preparedness
The Andaz fire serves as a reminder that as Providenciales continues to expand vertically, emergency response capabilities must also continue to evolve.
Modern tourism developments represent hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and accommodate thousands of guests and employees each year. With that growth comes an equally important responsibility to ensure emergency services are equipped with the personnel, equipment and resources necessary to respond effectively should serious incidents occur.
While authorities continue investigating the cause of the fire, aerial observations obtained by Eagle Legal News indicate that the affected suite sustained significant damage.
It remains unclear whether the incident will affect the anticipated opening timeline for the resort or whether structural assessments will be required before occupancy.
Invitation to Respond
Eagle Legal News invites the Turks and Caicos Islands Fire and Rescue Service, the Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development Department (PPID), the Planning Department, the Building Control Unit, and other relevant government agencies to publicly address these concerns and provide reassurance regarding the country’s readiness to respond to emergencies involving high-rise buildings.
As Providenciales’ skyline continues to grow, most persons believe the nation’s emergency preparedness must grow alongside it.
This remains a developing story, and Eagle Legal News will continue to follow both the official investigation into the Andaz fire and the broader public safety discussion it has generated.
Eagle Legal News appreciates the response provided by Andaz Turks & Caicos and will continue to report fairly on both the ongoing investigation into the fire and the wider public safety questions that have emerged following the incident.
